Marky the Rescued South Texas Dog: Update

I wish I was writing to tell you that Marky is in his forever home, or that he is in foster care with Sheree, being considered as her forever dog. Unfortunately, neither is the case at this point. It has been a while since I've updated you about Marky because I don't really have anything new to report.

Marky remains in foster care with Cindy and is doing very well. He gets along well with other dogs, and the great news is he does well with cats, too, I learned. The report continues to be that he is both sweet and smart.

Marky will still go to Sheree if she becomes ready and able to take him. In the meantime, the Brownsville SPCA will begin to take Marky once again to PetsMart on the weekends for exposure to potential adopters. Will you please visit Marky's page at Petfinder.com and share his information and picture in his Petfinder link with your dog loving friends who may be interested in adopting him? He is still just under a year old -- a perfect time for him to form a deep bond with you.

If you are new to my blog, you can see previous posts on Marky at:

Wow, I didn't realize how many posts I had about that little rescue who really so touched my heart... I will not be writing more about Marky until he is adopted.

She Couldn't Imagine Life Without Her Dog

We've all heard or read stories about spouses or brothers and sisters who die just days apart because their bond is so close. I remember the incredible, late Buckminster Fuller dying as soon as he was told his wife had passed.

I speak often of the close human-canine bond, both in my blog and in my book. Here is part of an article that demonstrates the deep bond between Natt Nevins and her beloved 15 year old dachshund, Nikkie.

NY DAILY NEWS, Saturday, May 9th

Dog lover Natt Nevins dies a day before beloved dachsund passes away

After her 15-year-old dachshund was diagnosed with cancer last month, Natt Nevins told friends she couldn't imagine life without her beloved dog, Nikkie.

"He was her baby. You couldn't think of Natt without Nikkie," said Nevins' longtime friend Betty Brown, whose dachshund, Chester, spent time with the colorful duo on long drives to upstate Woodstock.

Brown was among the dozens of friends - including an army of dachshunds, Shih Tzu's, Chihuahuas and other small dogs - that gathered at Nevins' West Village apartment Thursday night to memorialize the well-loved duo.

Nevins, 74, a community activist, dog lover and fixture in the Greenwich Village dog community, died this week, just a few days after suffering a massive stroke. Her darling Nikkie - described by many as a Casanova with "Betty Davis eyes" - survived Nevins by only one day.

The longtime Manhattan resident rescued the long-haired dachshund when he was just a 1-year-old pup, surrendered by a family with kids that burned him and tied cans to his legs...

Thank you, Natt Nevins, for rescuing and giving a forever home to this formerly abused dog, and for giving him your love and safety for 15 years. He obviously didn't want to live without you, either. And thank you for your years of commitment to the dog community. They needed your activism, and may we follow in your footsteps to speak out and care for dogs/animals.

The First Dog, Bo, Joins the Obama Family

Photo taken from Obama's Dog Blog

The Obama's new dog, Bo, did not spend any time in a shelter. But sources say he wasn't a fit with his original family. So that constitutes a rescue, doesn't it? A good breeder will typically ask for a pup to be returned to them rather than to a shelter if the situation doesn't work out when one of their dogs is placed in a home.

The Obama's daughter, Malia, has allergies. Portuguese Water dogs do not shed as much hair and are said by some to aggravate people allergies less (there are those who say a hypoallergenic dog is more specific to the person and tests are available to determine an individual's response to an individual dog).

But the breed is not for everyone. A "Portie" is very energetic and needs a guardian who will exercise him regularly. This is true for so many dogs, whether it be a shelter dog, rescue dog, or a purebred dog. Having the honor of a dog in your life takes a committment -- one that lasts for the lifetime of the dog. Perhaps our First Family can be an example to the world on how to take great care of a dog to keep him fit, happy and healthy.

Whether or not you think our president broke a promise to adopt a rescue dog or not, you can't miss the joy on the faces of the Obama children as they romp with their very own first dog. Look at the smiles on all of their faces! Do you all remember that feeling of your very own first dog?

Did the Obamas rescue a dog in need of a good home or not? Let me hear your thoughts.
